The Trauma Resource Institute

"Yet without warning, a life can suddenly chance
on its hidden rhythm, find a flow it never knew
Where the heart was blind, subtle words rise into view
                            Where the mind was forced
                        Crippled thought begins to dance."
                                                               John O'Donohue

Welcome!  I am the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Trauma Resource Institute, a nonprofit corporation that was started in December 2006 with Dr. Laurie Leitch.  We are dedicated to bringing culturally sensitive interventions to the underserved communities worldwide, based on cutting edge models of care that are culturally sensitive and can be taught simply.

I have co-created the Trauma Resiliency Models with Dr. Leitch. We conduct trainings around the world in our integrated mind, body and spirit approach to healing traumatic stress responses.  We now have three models:

1.  Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM)

2.  Trauma Resiliency Model-Community (TRM-C) or the             Community Resiliency Model (CRM)

3.  Trauma Resiliency Model, Veteran and Warrior (TRM-V&W)

The skills taught are the same in both TRM and TRM-V&W with the later focusing on treating war zone trauma.  TRM-C is taught to paraprofessionals, peer counselors, chaplains, ministers, priests and community members and include the first five skills of TRM.  TRM-C/CRM is designed to use in a triaged system within the United States, where if the client needs more advanced treatment, referrals are made to a professional therapist or doctor. For more information about our trainings go to www.traumaresourceinstitute.com.

We have traveled nationally and internationally, working on humanitarian efforts, in Thailand, New Orleans and Baton Rouge Louisiana, China, Kenya and Haiti.

Professional conferences where I have presented include:  the Psychotherapy Networker Conference, the International Conference on Violence and Trauma, The Women in Military Conference, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies, the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, The Brain at War Conference, the California MFT Annual Conference and Catholic Charities Annual Conference. I have also served as a consultant to the Navajo Nation's Sweet Success and Pregnancy Program.

I have co-directed the Chinese Earthquake Relief Project in the Sichuan Province of China, a project that has been co-sponsored by the World Health Organization and the Foundation for Human Enrichment.  In response to the Haitian Earthquake of 2010, we created a project called the Haitian Earthquake Relief Project that has been sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.

In Claremont, California, I have a private practice, focusing on the treatment of traumatic stress.  Clients are guided to find a pathway of healing through an integration of a variety of mind and body therapies including the Trauma Resiliency Model and EMDR.

My therapeutic approach combines elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic, EMDR and the Trauma Resiliency Model/Somatic Experiencing to expand the healing potential inherent in all human beings. The client is gently guided and discovers that with greater sensory awareness of traumatic patterns and of their own inner capacity to heal, the events of her/his past can be processed and released. An experience of greater inner peace may emerge and a growing belief often begins to blossom that the anguish and suffering that once haunted the present can be transformed. The traumatic memories can diminish in one's mind and body and be placed in their proper place, in the past.
